The October edition of First Friday on the Southside is loaded with things to do and see. From family-friendly arts and crafts to late-night live music, there is something for everyone. In addition to the normal First Friday happenings, October marks the beginning of Touchstone Theater’s Festival Unbound – a 10-day celebration of art, music, dance, history and original theater.
Let’s get you started with the brand new Scavenger Hunt. The first running of this event in September was so popular it’s back for October and is likely to be a permanent First Friday fixture going forward. To obtain your map, stop by the Southside Arts District Office at 324 S. New St. starting at 11am Friday. Visit 5 locations to take advantage of your special offer, have your map stamped and turn it in at the office for a chance to win a $100 gift card. The map will lead you right to many of the musicians we have lined up for you. For details on the Scavenger Hunt, visit the Southside Arts District Facebook page or http://www.southsideartsdistrict.com.
On the Arts scene, there will be a kids scavenger hunt and crafts at the Banana Factory from 6-8pm and art exhibits at Fox Optical, the Charter Arts School and the Banana Factory. There is also the opening ceremony for Festival Unbound which begins at the intersection of New St and the Greenway.
While you may just be coming to the Southside for the music, please be sure to visit one or more of the many participating merchants. In addition to live music, there are many merchants who offer discounts or food and drink specials throughout the district. You can find participating merchants by visiting the Southside Arts District website or simply look for the First Friday flag or banner hanging at their location.
Of course, we’re all about the music here at Voices of the Valley and there is another great lineup in store for you this month. Here’s who you can look forward to seeing as you make your way around town: Mitchell Kresge of Plum at EZ Money, 20 W.4th St (5pm), Doug Kaetz at Revel Social, 213 Broadway (5:30), Jeremiah Williams at Hill-to-Hill Grill (5:30), Brian Kibler at Molly’s Irish Grille & Sports Pub, 4th & New Sts (6pm), Jeni Englund at the Banana Factory, 25 W. 3rd St (6:15), Glenwood – Formerly Kara Hartzell at Domaci, 21 E. 3rd St (7pm), Shorty Long and the Jersey Horns w/DJ MC Tom Taylor at Wind Creek Molten Lounge (7pm) and Golden Twine at Southside 313 Bar & Grill, 313 E 3rd st (9pm). Godfrey Daniels has a ticketed event, hosting the Hipster Assassins at 8pm. For details and tickets visit http://www.godfreydaniels.org.
Of course, so much of this event is made possible with the help of our sponsors, Comfort Suites Hill-to-Hill Grill, Arts Quest and Lehigh University. Come visit the Southside for the great food and amazing deals and stick around for the music. Or, come for the music and visit some of our many fine restaurants, bars and merchants. Either way, we’ll see on the Southside this First Friday.
